[dc]W[/dc]hile VenusBlogs was able to establish a formidable presence at the Massachusetts Conference for Women, there was an underlying theme going on throughout the day and it was made most apparent in the talks given by Keynote Speakers Deepak Chopra, Arianna Huffington and Brené Brown.

What these speakers seemed to focus on was the idea that, no matter what we’ve gone through on a personal level, as well as what we all share in the mutual and general past experience of our being human beings — we need to take the entirety of our past experience and recreate ourselves anew. We must give value to all the bad choices and wrong turns we made by setting ourselves straight, and we can do this by making healthful, conscientious decisions that will better ourselves and our world.

Deepak Chopra spoke of the caterpillar, alluding to the metaphor of it’s uniquely transformational life. The nature of a caterpillar is to overeat until it literally starts to die. While the excess weight starts to kill the caterpillar, there’s also another force going into action and those are the “imaginal” cells, which basically fight off the death of the body by transforming the weight into a cocoon, instead of letting the caterpillar die. They call these cells “imaginal” because they seem to perceive new life, as if imagined, within a situation that presents only a promise of death. Once stimulated, they imagine and manifest life anew. The cells digest the dying weight and transform it into life. So much so, that the death of the caterpillar’s excessive body is really, in essence, only a stepping stone to a new, winged miracle — rebirth, a second chance — the butterfly.

So, we as people, as a society, are like this caterpillar. We’ve consumed everything we can — we’re fat with our excess, we are dying due to all of our choices, our desire for destruction — for self-destruction. What we need to do, says Chopra, is “imagine” the butterfly that we are in potential, and feed off the past in order to recreate ourselves into the nurturing, wise, constructive human beings that we’ve denied ourselves the peace of being for so long.

Arianna Huffington said something similar when she spoke of how one things leads to another; how her desire to have children with a man who didn’t want them led her to a heartbreaking decision that put her in an entirely different world, and had that event not happened — at the moment it did — she would not be the woman she is today, heading up the largest, most well-read news publication on the planet.

Brené Brown suggested the same thing when she referred to her talks from The Power of Vulnerability and said that sometimes fear is the only thing that prevents us from owning who we are, who we are meant to be. She also spoke of women and heartbreak, and how we need to let our emotions work for us, as opposed to folding under the pressure of them. She said that even though it’s a scary place for a woman to stand up for what she wants, the life-changing rewards are beyond the imagination — if we only make the move and stay true to ourselves.

So, these are our new guidelines. And, truthfully, there’s nothing new about them — but that doesn’t dull their potency or the absolute need to set them in motion.

What do we need to do? We need to be ourselves, the best of ourselves…we need to rise above our fears. We need to be healthy and trust that our healthy decisions will work for not only us but for the benefit of all humanity — whether it’s eating less or texting less. We need to trust in ourselves, be brave, take chances and most of all, we need to believe that we can be good, that we can do good and that we ARE good.

    Loved Deepak’s example,this is why we admire him so much. I myself,have made major changes this year. With the changes on the outside,I have changed on the inside as well. I look at life differently and with more respect. We all have the power to be a butterfly,once we put the past behind us
