We just don’t know who to step on anymore, do we? Once upon a time we loved the curvy, fleshy bodies that belonged to every single model who ever posed for a painting — the “Rubenesque” women. Then, as time and fashion influenced what little independent thinking we could muster up on our own, we — en masse — decided that we not only hated everything plump and round, we also had to simultaneously worship the opposite: the uber-skinny. MEDIA, SEX
Gabrielle Vaughn | VenusBlogs Editor at Large

As years go, 2012 did seem to stand out as exceptional when it came to sex scandals, misunderstandings, sexually charged debates and hot sexual topics in politics. But in all honesty, if one word soared to the top of the heap, it was the word, vagina. You didn’t get away with living through 2012 without knowledge of this word.

Vagina wins the VenusBlogs Award for Word of the Year!

2012 really gave us a shot of reality when we saw how many incredible women left us this year. Thanks to Glamor.com we can celebrate their lives with some of the best articles and information gathered on some of the women who passed in 2012, women whose lives we won’t forget. Etta James (January 25, 1938-January 20, 2012): One of the greatest blues singers of all time, she crooned the timeless ballads “At Last” and “Sunday Kind of Love.”

Whitney Houston (August 9, 1963-February 11, 2012): She’s the reason we were belting “I Will Always Love You” at the top of our lungs in the shower, and we all cried the day we found out she died from drug use in a Beverly Hills hotel. We’ll always feel the heat with somebody in her memory. Read more

“I Am Beautiful”

AESTHETICS

I always have to remind myself that not every woman is on the same level as the enlightened few when it comes to self-acceptance and personal body image. With all of the many hurdles that so many of us have to leap over in order to get to a place where we finally love ourselves “just the way we are”, we also have to understand that there are thousands of women who have not yet crossed that border.

Loving one’s own body doesn’t always come naturally, and the journey to this body-acceptance often takes a detour — especially for younger women at the end of a relationship. Often times they will question their own sex appeal, wondering if it was something about their physical appearance that was literally a turn off to their partner.

“Was it my body? Was I so ugly? Was it my skin, my scars, my breasts — what is wrong with me?” Read more
